2008 Proposal: Kartsaris Play Liszt

Legendary pianist Cyprien Katsaris is enjoying a major revival in Europe after starting his own recording label, Piano 21 just a few years ago. Now, news of the re-issue of his recording with Eugene Ormandy has prompted him to offer a unique all "Liszt" programme for concerts in 2007 and 2008:

EMI Re-releases famous Katsaris/Ormandy Collaboration

EMI Japan has re-issued the famous "Lost Liszt Concerto" recording made with Eugene Ormandy and the Philadelphia Orchestra in 1981, and these will soon be issued worldwide on Piano 21. On the recording are the Concerto in the Hungarian Style, Hungarian Fantasy (No. 2 below), and Schubert's Wanderer Fantasy (No. 4 below). To celebrate the re-issue, Katsaris is offering the following programme for 2007-2008, part of which he gives with the Deutsche Symphonieorchester in Berlin on April 30 and 1 May 2007 (this is the former Radio Symphony Orchestra of Berlin, the orchestra in residence at the famous Berlin Philharmonic Hall):

  1. Liszt/Burmeister: Hungarian Rhapody No. 5 "Heroid Elegiac" arranged for orchestra by Liszt's pupil Richard Burmeister. (ca. 10') Cyprien Katsaris is the only pianist in the world who has the score to this piece OR
Liszt/Liszt: Hungarian Fantasy Liszt's own arrangement of his 14th Rhapsody (ca. 15') (on the EMI recording) -and-
  2. Liszt: Piano Concerto No. 2 by Liszt (ca. 22') -or-
  3. Schubert/Liszt: Wanderer Fantasy (ca. 20') (on the EMI recording)

Liszt House-Museum in Weimar

Virtuoso Liszt interpreter Cyprien Katsaris was specially honoured by the Liszt House-Museum in Weimar, where Liszt spent the last years of his life giving masterclasses and public performances. The former residence was turned into a museum after Liszt's death. After the house was completely renovated in 2006, Cyprien Katsaris was the first pianist invited to inaugurate its reopening with a recital on 25 of March 2006. In addition, Katsaris gave three days of master classes, just in the same room as Liszt had done - the first masterclasses to be given in the house since Liszt's last in 1886.

Katsaris plays Liszt in Shanghai

In October 2005 Katsaris gave his debut recital in Shanghai at the Liszt Festival of the Shanghai Conservatory, an honour he shared with pianists Leslie Howard, Jerome Lowenthal and David Dubal. The organiser of the Festival, Vice Director of the Piano Department of Shanghai Conservatory Professor Zhou Keng spoke of being "enraptured by his musical technique, and the colour and emotions conveyed through his playing." After the Katsaris performance, the American-trained Zhou proclaimed it was "the best recital of his life." The recital was filmed and will be shown throughout China on National TV.

Katsaris debuts in Seoul and in Kuala Lumpur in December 2006; his June 2007 Singapore debut has him featured in Singapore's prestigious International Piano Festival.
